Robert Biery Sr.

Robert Biery graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Architecture and Engineering in 1958. He was licensed to practice in Louisiana and subsequently received national accreditation from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) to practice nation-wide.

Before forming his own firm, he worked for several distinguished firms, culminating in his employment as Project Architect in the firm of Curtis & Davis. While there, he programmed and designed various large-scale institutional projects, including educational, medical, and correctional facilities.

As his skills developed, he began to take an avid interest in lighting, color and interior design.  He found smaller scale projects more interesting and fulfilling, so in 1968 he formed his own firm, Biery & Toups. He taught interior design at Tulane University for 14 years, further developing his knowledge in a discipline which most architects ignore.

In 1979, when his son graduated, they formed the new firm of Robert Biery and Son. Although Bob had been an ardent modernist in his early career, his son’s interest in historical architectural design concepts, combined with his own fascination with interior design, caused his work to evolve. Working closely with his son, they began to incorporate classical concepts into the firm’s work to give it a warmer, more human dimension.
